He tangata, he tangata, he tangata!
Wednesday Jul 22, 2020
Wednesday Jul 22, 2020
In this episode of Stirring the Pot we talk with Jane Kennelly. Founder and current Business Director of recruiting powerhouse Frog Recruitment.
For 30 years she has been helping organisations unlock the potential of their greatest assets – their people 'he tangata'. Working with leaders on how to not only leverage their people to improve their bottom line, but also add significant value to their communities at the same time.
Jane has been instrumental in skilling and tooling organisations up on how to pivot quickly, and this is something we delve into today - as we discuss remote dispersed workforces which certainly became the norm over the COVID19 lockdown period, as well as fascinating insights she's picked up along the way!

Calculating carbon footprint
Wednesday Jul 08, 2020
Wednesday Jul 08, 2020
In this episode of Stirring the Pot we talk about a subject that might be a bit unfamiliar to our industry – and that’s calculating carbon footprint.
It’s a part of a journey toward SSC Certification that will enable businesses, especially SMEs to build their skill and capacity.
To help drive this conversation, we’re joined by our very own CEO, Dr Troy Coyle, as well as Christin Schaller & Barbara Nebel of thinkstep-anz.
thinkstep-anz are a sustainability consultancy passionate about enabling organisations to succeed in sustainability using a science-based approach. They were also engaged to assist HERA in calculating our own carbon footprint as we worked to meet the criteria to become SSC Certified.

Hydrogen - an alternative reductant?
Wednesday Jun 24, 2020
Wednesday Jun 24, 2020
In this episode of Stirring the Pot we talk to recent recipient of HERA’s Innovation Award - Chris Bumby.
As a Victoria University of Wellingtons Senior Scientist, he has been heading exciting research that is leading towards the development of hydrogen as a reductant for iron ores. This would mean that water, instead of carbon dioxide, would be the bi-product of reduction and may eliminate the use of coal.
Their work has already developed a small-scale zero-carbon way to make iron that works especially well for New Zealand iron sands. The one-step process is also looking promising in that it produces very high purity iron very quickly.
Excitingly, the team have recently won a $6.5 million grant to start to scale-up the process to tens of kilograms level, taking it one step further towards the aimed eventual commercial scale.

20/20 VISION - HERA's Future Forum
Wednesday Mar 18, 2020
Wednesday Mar 18, 2020
In this episode of Stirring the Pot, we check in with our CEO Dr Troy Coyle and Metals NZ CE Nick Collins.
Together we reflect back on the first of HERA's Future Forum Conference which this year was aptly called 20/20 VISION.
Its theme was visualising the future - and our goal was to look at discussing some of the key challenges facing our industry so that together we could come up with ways to solve these issues and help our industry be more future focused.
Throughout this podcast we touch on the following aspects of the event:
Nation Breakfast - hosted by HR Specialist Alia Bojilova and a panel of engineering students, this delved into the skills crisis, labour shortages, the future of work, and how we can better attract and retain talent.
A futurists view on steel - presented by Futurist Chris Riddell. This NZ Steel sponsored keynote speaker delved into future opportunities and threats of disruption for our industry and the world in general!
Steel bridge to the future - presented by MX3D CEO Gijs Van der Velden. This keynote speaker came to us from Amsterdam where he presented on his robotics lab and 3D-printing business which has changed the face of architectural fabrication through optimisation. Using learning from his project to deliver the worlds first 3D-printed steel bridge to explain the opportunities for our industry and inspire technology adoption.
Building a tribe - presented by Innovation and Business Commentator, Mike Hutchinson. This key note speaker delved into his background in PR to better understand how communications are key to building a tribe of passionate metalheads who together innovate successfully.
Hook em' & keep em' - retaining staff - presented by HR Specialist, Alia Bojilova. This key note speaker leveraged her experiences in the NZ Defence Force where she was held captive in Syria to better understand resilience, wellbeing in workplace and the importance of disestablishing tiers of leadership to ensure all staff are appreciated and have a voice.
Scanning to the future - presented by Watkins Steel CEO, Des Watkins. This NZ Steel sponsored keynote speaker shared his journey to transition from business as usual to a fully integrated technology system within his workshop. Exploring the challenges faced, the outputs of his decision to embrace the future, and the multiple business opportunities that grew from this action.
An indigenous approach to STEM engagement - presented by Puhoro STEM academy. This presentation brought Te Ao Maori (the world of Maori) to life, why it's important to get more Maori engaged in engineering, and the benefits of programs that foster this belief in terms of diversity of thought and more future engineers in the pipeline.
Nation Dinner - hosted by MC Rawdon Christie, this was a night of glitz and glame to celebrate our industry wins, with a strong focus on sustainability and inovation.

Today our conversation is with Puhoro STEM Academy’s Leland Ruwhiu who is responsible for Operations. As navigators their role is to better support Maori student engagement with STEM disciplines via mentoring, tutoring and wananga, which is experiential learning and field trips.
We also have in studio our very first Whanake Scholarship Recipient and Mechatronical Student at Massey University, Sarah Lewis, who’ll be sharing her perspective on STEM as an aspiring engineer starting out her career.
Together, we’ll scratch below the surface to better understand how we can improve Maori engagement in STEM, and why that is important for our industry.
